# License and reporting

Your license determines what you can access through the ecoinvent API. This page explains how your license works and how to report when you deliver ecoinvent data to your end users.

#### What your license defines

Your license grants two entitlements, enforced by the API:

* **Catalogue browsing** — you can view and search the full ecoinvent dataset catalogue, regardless of your plan. Impact scores are excluded from browsing.
* **Impact scores** — you can retrieve impact scores for datasets within your unique dataset limit (see below) and only for the indicators included in your indicator package (Carbon Footprint, Climate Indicators, or Full Impact). See [Indicator packages](/overview/core-concepts.md#lcia-methods-and-indicators) for the full breakdown.

#### Understanding your unique dataset limit

Your tier includes a limit on the number of *unique datasets* you can retrieve impact scores for. A unique dataset is a specific ecoinvent activity identified by its dataset ID and system model. Requesting the same dataset multiple times counts as one unique dataset — there is no limit on how often you call a dataset you've already accessed. The limit applies only when you access a *new* dataset you haven't retrieved before.

Once you reach your unique dataset limit, score requests for datasets not yet in your accessed set will be rejected. Catalogue browsing is unaffected.

Example: on a 500-dataset tier, you can call the same 500 datasets an unlimited number of times. Requesting a 501st unique dataset will fail.

#### Understanding organizations

An **organization** is any company or customer you onboard onto your platform and deliver ecoinvent data to. Each new organization you onboard counts toward your billing. Check your license agreement or contact your account manager for the per-organization pricing applicable to your plan.

#### What to report

Reporting is tied to delivery events. Each time you provide a dataset and its impact scores to one of your organizations, submit a usage report including:

* the **dataset** delivered,
* the **indicators** returned for that dataset, and
* the **organization** the data was delivered to.

This applies even when serving from your own cache. If you retrieved a dataset earlier and are now passing it to a new organization, that delivery still requires a report — no new API call is needed for reporting to be required. Think of a report as representing a handoff of data to a specific organization, not an API call. One API retrieval may generate many reports over time.

Reporting on dataset consumption is a contractual part of your license agreement.

#### Reporting endpoint

Submit reports via `POST /v3/api1/reports`. See the API Reference for the full request/response schema.
